Reviving a Classic: Antrim Forum Leisure Centre Gets a Fresh Track with CONIPUR SW
2. April 2025
The Antrim Forum Leisure Centre in Northern Ireland has long been a cornerstone for local athletics—a facility where community, performance, and tradition intersect. After more than 20 years of service, the centre’s athletics track, originally surfaced with CONIPUR SW, was due for renewal. Rather than choosing an entirely new direction, stakeholders recognised the value of consistency and performance—and chose to build on a trusted legacy.

The original track, installed over two decades ago, had provided excellent long-term durability and maintained strong user satisfaction throughout its lifespan. When the local council initiated plans for a full lift and relay of the surface, the original tender initially called for a different system. However, CONICA engaged early with McAdam Design, the architectural and planning partner, to present CONIPUR SW as a viable alternative—one with a proven track record, supported by technical performance and aesthetic flexibility.
Thanks to this collaboration, CONIPUR SW was once again specified in early 2023. Its multi-layered structure and excellent resilience made it the ideal solution for long-term use under high training and competition loads. From a planning perspective, it also offered confidence: minimal disruption during installation, excellent weather resistance, and a surface familiar to facility operators and end users alike.

Although the project encountered an unexpected change in circumstances, the Council acted swiftly to keep things on track—appointing E Quinn as the new main contractor in early 2024. Installation was handed over to Sportex AL, whose experience with CONICA systems ensured precise execution and a high-quality finish across the 6,375 m² track area.
One of the most striking features of the new installation is its visual identity. The choice of RAL 5002 and RAL 5009, commonly known as Hertha Blue, brings a bold yet professional look to the facility. The colours were carefully selected not only for their aesthetic value, but also for their ability to integrate seamlessly with the track’s surroundings and support visual clarity for athletes. As with all CONICA solutions, the surface was engineered for both performance and practicality: slip resistance, shock absorption, ball bounce, and minimal maintenance were key considerations throughout the planning phase.

This project stands as a powerful example of how collaborative planning, product reliability, and responsive project management can transform a challenging situation into a success story. For architects and planners, the Antrim Forum track shows how continuity in system selection—combined with innovation in colour, form, and delivery—can offer both design confidence and end-user satisfaction. For installers, it reinforces the value of working with systems that are consistent, reliable, and backed by experienced partners throughout the supply chain.

The renewed CONIPUR SW track at Antrim Forum not only extends the legacy of a trusted surface—it reaffirms the centre’s commitment to quality sport infrastructure for years to come.
