Three Months to Go: Madrid Prepares to Host Europe’s Best on a CONICA Track
25. March 2025
The stage is nearly set. In just three months, the Madrid 2025 European Athletics Team Championships will bring together the continent’s top athletes for one of the most anticipated events of the year—taking place on a world-class CONICA track at the Estadio de Vallehermoso.

This marks a historic moment for Spain
While Madrid (1996) and Málaga (2006) previously hosted the European Cup—Europe’s premier team competition in its earlier form—this will be the first time the country welcomes the championships under their modern format. Since the event’s rebranding in 2009, the European Athletics Team Championships have become a flagship showcase of national team strength, unity, and athletic excellence.

A Championship with Momentum
Expectations are high as the excitement builds. Italy returns to defend the team title they captured for the first time in 2023 in Silesia, Poland. With a commanding performance at the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships—where the Italian team claimed 24 medals, including 11 golds—they are widely seen as a formidable force heading into Madrid.
But competition will be fierce. Powerhouse teams from Germany, Poland, Spain, Great Britain & Northern Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Czechia, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, and Greece will all be in contention. They’ll be joined by Hungary, Ukraine, and Lithuania, who earned promotion to Europe’s top league. Together, these teams will light up the Spanish capital in a weekend of high-level, team-focused competition.

A Track Designed for Champions
At the heart of this championship lies a key element: the track itself. The Estadio de Vallehermoso—Madrid’s signature athletics venue—features a CONIPUR M system supplied by CONICA, European Athletics’ trusted surface partner. This isn’t just any track. It’s a surface engineered for performance, designed to support elite competition while standing up to the demands of weather, wear, and world-class use.
Julio Fernando Fadel, Head of Global Marketing & Communication at CONICA, expressed his pride in being part of this prestigious event:
“We are thrilled that European Athletics and the Spanish Federation have selected this unique CONICA track at Estadio de Vallehermoso. It’s a reflection of the trust placed in our quality, and a true honour to contribute to such an important competition. We look forward to seeing Europe’s best athletes deliver their performances on a track built to support excellence.”
A City Rooted in Athletics
Madrid is no stranger to hosting major sporting events. Its legacy in athletics runs deep, from the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona 2010 to multiple editions of the European Indoor Championships and the European Cross Country Championships.
The Countdown Begins
As the countdown enters its final stretch, all eyes turn to Madrid. The 2025 European Athletics Team Championships promise more than just competition—they represent the strength of European sport, the passion of national pride, and the importance of a stage worthy of the athletes who will perform on it.
