On 20 August 2025, Lausanne celebrated the 50th edition of Athletissima, one of the most iconic meetings on the Wanda Diamond League calendar. Heavy rain and cool conditions could have overshadowed this milestone, but instead, the evening turned into a celebration of resilience, passion and world-class performance.
Torrential rain tested athletes, organizers and fans alike. Normally, such conditions raise concerns about safety, especially in explosive disciplines such as sprints and hurdles. Yet throughout the evening, competitors were able to perform with confidence. The track at Stade Olympique de la Pontaise, already more than ten years old, once again proved its durability and consistency at the highest level of sport. Its grip and water permeability allowed the competition to run smoothly and surely helped prevent injuries, an important factor with the World Championships just around the corner.
The evening itself brought plenty of highlights despite the difficult weather. Cordell Tinch of the United States delivered a strong performance in the 110-metre hurdles, racing to 12.98 seconds as though the conditions were of no consequence. In the men’s 100 metres, Jamaica’s Oblique Seville dominated the field with a commanding 9.87, leaving Olympic champion Noah Lyles behind. Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson produced one of the defining moments of the night by breaking a 23-year-old meeting record in the women’s 800 metres, clocking an exceptional 1:55.69. The Swiss crowd also had reason to celebrate when Audrey Werro achieved her first-ever Diamond League podium and Ditaji Kambundji thrilled supporters with a strong third-place finish in the 100-metre hurdles.

This anniversary edition was more than just a competition; it was a reminder of what makes Athletissima so special. Since its beginnings in 1977, the meeting has grown into one of the highlights of the global athletics calendar, attracting Olympic champions, world record holders and rising stars. The 50th edition was rainy, emotional and unforgettable, proving once again that true excellence can shine even in the toughest conditions.
