CONIPUR 4020: The flexible binder for safe and durable sports and playground surfaces
16. July 2025
In spaces where children play, athletes train, or people gather to stay active, surface quality matters. A well-designed floor should offer protection, durability, and visual appeal — while encouraging movement and fun.

CONIPUR 4020 is a high-performance, moisture-curing polyurethane binder developed for the creation of elastic surfaces in playgrounds, multi-purpose sports areas, and recreational spaces.
Its easy workability and excellent mechanical properties make it the binder of choice for small to mid-sized projects that demand both safety and long-lasting performance.
Engineered for versatile applications
From colourful playgrounds to multi-purpose sports courts, CONIPUR 4020 helps create resilient and elastic surfaces tailored to each project’s needs.
Whether you are installing a fall protection layer with recycled rubber granules or a vibrant EPDM surface, the binder ensures a uniform finish and lasting quality.
Typical uses include:
- Playground safety surfacing
- Sports and play surfaces in schools and kindergartens
- Multi-purpose courts for sports and recreation
- Accessible movement areas in public parks and residential spaces
Performance you can trust
One of the standout features of CONIPUR 4020 is its carefully balanced viscosity. This ensures the binder mixes smoothly with granulates without penetrating the substrate. The result: consistent, stable surfaces with excellent shock absorption and wear resistance — even under heavy daily use.
Fast and efficient installation is another key advantage. With a short processing window, the binder is ideal for manual installation on small or geometrically complex surfaces where precision and speed are essential.
Colour flexibility and UV considerations
CONIPUR 4020 can be used with coloured EPDM granules to create visually striking surfaces.
However, users should note that UV exposure may cause some yellowing of the binder at the surface level. Depending on the colour of the EPDM this effect is more or less visible. However, this aesthetic change does not affect mechanical properties.
For projects requiring maximum colour stability, CONICA offers UV-stable alternatives such as CONIPUR 4090 (for manual installation) and CONIPUR 6090 (for machine installation).
Installation recommendations
To achieve the best results, we recommend the following processing guidelines:
- Material temperature: 15–25 °C
- Substrate preparation: firm, clean, dry, and load-bearing
- Binder dosage:
- Recycled granulate (2–6 mm): 7.5-9 %
- Recycled granulate (1–4 mm): 18-20 %
- EPDM granulate (1–3.5 mm): 20 %
Proper mixing with a compulsory mixer, careful manual application, and thorough compaction are essential to creating a seamless, durable surface. Special attention should be given to seam finishing to avoid future weak points.
Compatible substrates and primers
For optimal adhesion, CONICA recommends:
- Concrete substrates: priming with CONIPUR 74 or CONIPUR 4710
- Asphalt substrates: priming with CONIPUR 70
Correct substrate preparation is key to ensuring long-term surface integrity and performance.
